The International Healthcare Volunteers (IHCV) is a nonprofit organization (Section 501c) established in 2001 by a Ghanaian, Dr. James Aikins, Jr, which provides free healthcare services to women and their families as well as continued medical education to healthcare professionals in underserved areas with particular emphasis on Ghana. Every year, for the past five years, IHCV has embarked on medical missions to Cape Coast In 2007; the mission was extended to KNUST Hospital. While in Kumasi, IHCV doctors attended to over 150 patients in the clinic with diabetes, hypertension, malaria and other ailments. They also performed 30 endoscopies and colonoscopies for patients with various gastrointestinal problems as well as 28 major surgical procedures in eight days. All the surgical and medical supplies as well as an anesthesia machine were provided by IHCV. IHCV plans to return to KNUST Hospital this August to provide similar care and also continue its collaborations with their colleagues at the medical school and hospital.
My challenge to KNUST Alumni in North America (especially the Northeast Region members) is to get involved in fundraising activities of IHCV to support and help out in securing medications or volunteering to come along (the Medical Doctors and Nurses) for subsequent trips. Our goal is to visit KNUST Hospital every summer in addition to Cape Coast Regional Hospital which we have been visiting since 2002. Thank you all.
